The Problem
You updated WooCommerce and now customers are hitting a blank shipping section at checkout. No rates showing. No way to complete the order. You have not changed any shipping settings, but something broke anyway.
This is one of the more frustrating WooCommerce issues because it is invisible to you until a customer tells you, or you spot it yourself during a test purchase. The good news is there are a small number of likely causes, and most of them are fixable without touching code.
Why This Happens
WooCommerce updates sometimes reset or conflict with shipping configuration. The most common reasons shipping methods disappear after an update are:
- Shipping zones lost their methods. The update process can occasionally strip the shipping methods assigned to a zone, leaving the zone intact but empty.
- A shipping plugin became incompatible. If you use a third-party plugin for rates (carrier-calculated shipping, table rate, local delivery), it may not yet be compatible with the new WooCommerce version.
- The shipping cache was not cleared. WooCommerce caches shipping rates. After an update, stale cache data can cause methods to appear missing even when the settings are correct.
- A conflict with another plugin or your theme. Updates change hooks and filters. Something that worked before may now interfere with how shipping rates are calculated or displayed.
- The customer’s address does not match any zone. This is not caused by the update itself, but it is worth checking if the issue only affects some customers.
Before You Start: Back Up First
Before changing anything, take a full backup of your site. Use your hosting backup tool or a plugin like UpdraftPlus. If something goes wrong during troubleshooting, you need a restore point.
Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1: Check Your Shipping Zones
- Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping.
- Click on each shipping zone and check whether any shipping methods are listed inside it.
- If a zone is empty, click Add shipping method and re-add the method you were using (flat rate, free shipping, local pickup, or your carrier plugin).
- Save the zone.
Also check the Locations not covered by your other zones entry at the bottom of the zones list. If your customer is in a region not matched by any zone, they will see no shipping options.
Step 2: Clear the Shipping Cache
- Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping > Shipping options.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Clear shipping rates cache.
- Save the settings.
This is often all it takes. WooCommerce stores calculated rates in a session cache, and after an update that cache can hold outdated data.
Step 3: Test With a Real Address
- Open your store in a private/incognito browser window.
- Add a product to the cart and go to checkout.
- Enter a full shipping address, including postcode and country, that matches one of your zones.
- Check whether shipping methods now appear.
If they do, the cache was the issue and you are done. If not, continue below.
Step 4: Check for Plugin Conflicts
- Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce and your theme.
- Test the checkout again with a real address.
- If shipping methods now appear, reactivate your plugins one at a time, testing after each one, until the conflict reappears.
- The last plugin you activated before shipping broke again is the conflict. Check whether that plugin has a pending update, or contact its developer.
Do this on a staging site if you can, so live customers are not affected while you test.
Step 5: Switch to a Default Theme Temporarily
If deactivating plugins did not help, switch your theme to Storefront or Twenty Twenty-Four temporarily. If shipping methods reappear, your theme is interfering with the checkout. Contact your theme developer or check their support forum for a compatibility update.
Step 6: Check WooCommerce System Status
- Go to WooCommerce > Status.
- Look for any red or amber items, particularly around PHP version, database version, or plugin conflicts.
- Address any flagged issues.
While you are here, confirm your PHP version is current. The PHP project has recently released security updates addressing critical vulnerabilities, and many hosts are applying these automatically. An unexpected PHP version change during a host-side update can occasionally cause plugin incompatibilities, including shipping plugins that have not been tested against the newer version.
Step 7: Re-save Your Shipping Methods
If the methods are present in the zone but still not showing at checkout, open each method inside the zone, make a minor change (such as adding a space to the title and removing it), and save. This forces WooCommerce to write fresh settings to the database and can resolve cases where the update left the settings in a corrupted state.
How to Prevent This Next Time
- Always test on staging before updating production. Run the update on a copy of your site first and do a checkout test before pushing it live.
- Check plugin compatibility before updating WooCommerce. Look at the changelog for your shipping plugins and confirm they support the new WooCommerce version.
- Keep a record of your shipping zone settings. Screenshot your zones and methods so you can rebuild them quickly if something resets.
- Set up a simple post-update checklist. After any update, run a test order through checkout before you do anything else.
When to Get Help
If you have worked through all the steps above and shipping methods are still missing, the issue is likely deeper: a database problem, a corrupted WooCommerce table, or a conflict that requires reading error logs. At that point, it is faster and safer to hand it to a developer than to keep troubleshooting blind. The same applies if your store is live and losing orders while you work through this.
